Music Illustration
This was a self-driven project where the main objective is to create an illustration that conveys the flow of music. The tool used for this project is Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Challenge
Effectively conveying the message of flowing music in an engaging illustration.
Process

Illustration Development

When illustrating the project, I used many of the skills I learnt from my previous illustration projects to understand and breakdown the light and shadows when approaching the illustration. I had chosen to illustrate a woman as my main focus not only to put into practice the skills I have developed on, but also because I wanted to make use of the fluidity of long hair. For clarity, I grouped the hair in 3-4 layers and progressively used a dark shade for the layers going to the background.

Further Development

The colour of her hair along with the overall colour theme was changed to a mixture of purple, pink and red. This was to convey more of a romantic feeling of the illustration. It would represent that the woman is swept up in the music and is going through almost a euphoric experience. During this period, I also experimented with the different methods that would achieve the brief. The headphones were also altered to better contrast against the hair.

Final Illustration

The final illustration depicts a woman listening to music through her headphones and her hair represents her emotions of being swept away by music. The music notes subtly make an entrance in the background to emphasise that the woman's attention is only on the music. The inclusion of the word flow reiterates and strengthens the message of the flow of music that is communicated by the woman's hair and background.
Takeaways
This was the first project where I had to show a person's emotions through the movement of their hair. I had to think creatively on how the hair would interactive with the rest of the design elements (text and background) so they are cohesive and effective. Overall, I view the project a successful learning experience.
